Organic Thin Film Transistors for Integrated Circuits

Abstract

The technology of organic thin film transistors (TFTs) has advanced rapidly over the past five years. Commercial products are expected to emerge within the next few years in the form of flexible displays in which organic TFTs are used to address the individual pixels. Another interesting and perhaps more challenging application for organic TFTs is in integrated circuits. Digital circuits are useful to integrate row and column drivers on flexible displays in order to reduce the number of external connections. For example, a 240-stage shift register with 4000 organic TFTs for use in a QVGA electrophoretic display was recently demonstrated by Polymer Vision. Analog circuits are of interest to implement sense amplifiers for organic-based optical or chemical sensors. Simple organic TFT-based amplifiers with bandwidths on the order of 1 kHz have already been reported. To make organic circuits more useful for portable and battery-powered applications, the operating voltage and power dissipation must be reduced. A significant reduction in operating voltage has recently been demonstrated through the use of ultra-thin self-assembled monolayer gate dielectrics. To reduce the power dissipation, complementary circuits are of great interest, but they require the development of air-stable, high-mobility n-channel organic semiconductors.
